Next generation batteries for eVTOLs
The University of Tennessee, Knoxville, in partnership with the DEVCOM Army Research Laboratory (ARL), is advancing next-generation hybrid eVTOL systems for Group 3+ UAS through integrated power, propulsion, and manufacturing innovations. The effort focuses on three areas: advanced lithium-ion batteries that reduce weight and improve performance in extreme conditions; a modular simulation and design tool for rapid optimization of hybrid propulsion and mission performance; and scalable manufacturing workflows for lightweight engine components using additive and conventional methods. In collaboration with ARL’s Versatile Tactical Power and Propulsion Essential Research Program (VICTOR) and industry partners such as Griffon Aerospace, the team is developing a unified framework to accelerate eVTOL design, evaluation, and deployment, culminating in flight demonstrations of enhanced operational capability.
